Great News

Today the Supreme Court upheld the ban on partial birth abortion that congress had passed and President Bush signed into law.  There is still a long way to go in the battle to save the lives of unborn children, but this is definitely a step in the right direction.

The decision was 5-4, which points to the need on the Supreme Court for another justice or two in the mold of Scalia, Thomas, and Roberts.

This also repudiates those who would say that President Bush has done nothing about abortion.

Hopefully we’ll see more rulings like this one. I am not sure they will take the next steps, but there is always hope.

It’s a step, that’s for sure. It is a battle that won’t be won over night, if at all, but it is a step in the right direction.

Bush still hasn’t done anything significant about abortion. By striking down a particular technique (instead of, say, third trimester abortions in general) the Supreme Court’s influence on the actual number of abortions performed will be negligible, but will give pro-life voters a warm fuzzy feeling. And it sets a dangerous precedent for courts to consider specific medical techniques instead of general legal principles (such as the legal status of the fetus). Why is it that this particular procedure is wrong (whenever), but abortion by other techniques at 9 months gestation are ok? Just some thoughts..
